It is hard to appreciate something that we can't perceive its value.
When I was in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, I could see the world outside my "tempurung". The people are going through a different pattern of life situations that I have never seen before. The experiences teach me to appreciate more what I already had all this while here.
Then it makes me wonder how would I feel to perform solat with Rasulullah, with sahabat 1400 years ago. They were fully occupied in solat, to the extend, after a battle, one sahabat asked others to pull out an arrow out off the thigh when he was performing solat.
I can travel in space, but unfortunately not in time.
The muslim mind evolved over time, where certain part of mind that used to be active during Islam glorious time, has been decreasingly used and become dormant. Eventually, we are loosing our true power. How are you going to use that part of brain when all you need to do is just follow?
That happens when end values legacy has become "gofer" legacy.
Gofer: just do like this and that, don't ask why. If I explain them to you, you will not understand and get confused. The quick fix is to enforce you to believe and just follow, otherwise, you "kufur".
While, the true fix is to make him listen to his inner voice (Spiritual Intelligence, SQ) that gives him the end values of his ibadats.
"One minute thinking is better than 70 rakaat solat sunat" - Hadith. One wrong paradigm that we, muslims, have been holding all this while is that thinking is solely a function of mind (aqal). In another word, everything is perceived as true as long as it is logical. Thus, you can't apply logic reasoning in religious matters. Stop there, then just follow!
However, we are not aware that thinking process transcends beyond logic which is more practical in human sense, they are emotional intelligence (EQ) and Spiritual Intelligence (SQ)
"Think with your soul"Mind cannot tell you what is absolutely right or wrong as it works based on reference and comparison. It always needs two points to compare which one is more right than another.
SQ is the function of giving you the strength to follow the heart voices. Voices that give you the feeling of absolute right and wrong. The strength to ensure you to behave humanly even though you are not being seen by others. The strength that ensure your IQ, EQ and PQ follow the right way of functioning, without being influenced by instant indulgences or self oriented desires.
"We always know what is right to do, but for some reasons, we just do otherwise; slightly or totally"

Solat can be a meditation. To feel our inner parts. To feel the air that we breath. The beats of the heart. The flow of the blood. That is why solat must be performed with full concentration (khusyuk).
Wuduk is to refresh the skin. To give you fresh feeling of your parts. So that, you will feel more alive. As if you can feel every cell that you have. To make you feel that you are verily here, now, standing in front of the One Who always know everything.
The strong feeling of being alive will bring you to yourself, to feel your existence. The being that is not the body, not the heart beat, not the skins, not everything that we feel but the feeler; the one that discrete, separated, alone, and shining.
Sometimes, to know what is, is by knowing what is not. Especially things that unmeasurable, for an instance; yourself. Illogical, is defined base on what we know as logical.
Eventually, you will feel yourself, the soul of being that disconnected from the body.
Stop the mind. Forget the past, let go all planning in future. Switch off the brain. Concentrate on your existence in the space.
Most of us perform solat with only subliminal consciousness. When we stand still or do routine motions, the brain is then busy processing it's memories, we find that solat is the best way to remember things we misplaced, things that we forget. All come from nowhere suddenly.
But we missed the essence of solat, it's objectives, it's true values.
The deeper you can feel your existence, the stronger will be your SQ. Then, you know how much you can grow, what the right choice you will choose.
When your body hurts, you know the reality of getting hurt is the body, not you.
That was how Bilal Al-Rabah endured the pain of torturing from his master so that he would return to his old religion, but he maintained to say ahad, ahad.. ahad.. to keep focusing his thinking, his heart, his soul on the One that he believed.

Al-Baqarah, 260.
